There has been some controversy about the quality of mission trip. Do they actually work? Are they worth it? I mean, how much can be done in 1 week? Aren’t mission trips really just an esteem booster for the people going on them? Things can’t change unless people stay longer. And we could just send our money that we waste going on these trips to the doctors and preachers in those countries so that it can be more useful than just a plane ticket.
All of this is so so so true.
Don’t miss this my friends! But CHRIST!
Do you see? We Christians don’t go on mission trips to give some of our strength to those in need, but we go to give CHRIST’S STRENGTH to those in need. We don’t go with the intentions of transforming broken areas, but we go to bring Christ who can restore ANYTHING!
Yes, we give out medical care, but we aren’t naive enough to think that our medical or dental care is actually going to sustain the city we go to. We use medical care to speak a whole lot more than medical terms. We use it to show those of the country we are visiting that we care. We are there to tell them that they matter. We are there to tell them they are worth more than they think.
We are there to tell them about Christ.
Yes, it’s correct that those to attend mission trips are also rewarded and blessed. The bible declares a promise that those who help the less fortunate will be blessed.
Revelation 22:12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done.”
Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Don’t you see, my friends? Sometimes those opposed and for are actually saying the same thing, but realizing their arguments aline. Yes, i have been so so extremely and utterly blessed by my time in missions in Mexico. I come back every single time with more and more blessings. But of course I do!! The Lord is my Promise Keeper. He will never forsake me. He says I will be rewarded on earth and/or in Heaven! But despite my rewards from Him, that isn’t why I go.
After one trip, my eyes were open. I realized the effect of mission. I realized the need these people had. Not a medical need, but a spiritual need. i realized that our call is real. Mark 16:15 is a REAL CALL! He has said to go in the word and tell of the Good News, and He is way smarter than me ! His thoughts are way Higher than mine! So I trust my God in knowing that these people need me, need us, to come and tell them! And i also trust my God in knowing that yes, i will be rewarded, but despite my rewards, I would do it anyway!!!
Of course some hearts might not have this same mindset. Yes there are people that go on mission trips for the wrong reasons. They just want to travel and this seems like a “humble” way to do it. But I promise you, even those hearts feel the God-given effects of these mission trips.
So yes. Mission trips are pointless. Yes going somewhere for a week is more of a vacation than a mission. BUT CHRIST. With Christ, missions become everything. Missions are important. Missions are soul saving, heart transforming, God-given experiences! And that is why we go. That is why we do crazy things to get on those plans or busses to travel to the next town over or the next country over to do what some might see as pointless. Because when we do this, we witness God turn impossible into possible. We see Him transform the hard hearts into soft childlike souls. It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s breathtaking to watch this happen.
So don’t let anyone tell you that mission is unimportant. The Lord is stronger than our human abilities. Our human abilities will fail. But Christ will not. And with Christ, our mission will continue to be a success.
Forever and ever, Amen!
